Love Daughter

Some years back, I had an opportunity to visit the famous “Amba” temple at Ambejogai in Latur. As I was coming out of the temple after praying, I saw a young lady in the temple. She was pregnant, almost nearing term. She was praying in subdued but audible voice. She said, “Ambabai, you are the most powerful Goddess. I am sincerely praying you to fill up my lap with a son and my heart with joy.” I could well understand her keenness to get a baby boy as India has still not come out of gender bias. The lady went on, she said,” I am sure you will give me a son. But mother, another request; please ensure that Hansa gets a daughter, Chandrabhaga gets a daughter and Kunda also gets a daughter. Only I should get a son and be privileged.” 

I have heard about a village in Rajasthan where a bridegroom and the wedding procession, “Baraat”, came to this village after eighteen years. For eighteen long years, no daughter was allowed to survive! 

Many people say, “For us, anything is fine. We don’t differentiate between son and daughter. All that we want is a healthy baby!” But in reality, when a baby girl is born, the reaction is just the opposite. 

While discussing and bemoaning about global warming, carbon emission, ecological imbalance, inflation, corruption, devaluation, recession, fiscal bankruptcy, natural calamities… do we realize that killing an innocent female soul before its birth is the ghastliest disaster one could ever think of? So save trees, save money, and also save girls. Adverse sex ratio in many of the developing countries alerts us to behave like creative humans, not destroyers. 

It is a proved fact that females are biologically superior to males. Further, given an opportunity, they can supersede men in any area, be it emotional, mental, intellectual, professional, or whatever. They have wisdom to be complimentary and not competitive. Therefore, the modern definition of “Ardha-narishwar” would be “woman” includes “man”, “she” includes “he” and “madam” include “adam”. If she says that a woman without her man is nothing, she really means that “a woman: without her, man is nothing.”
