Greed |
Sakharam used to pray to God every day. Though he was honest and hardworking, he was facing financial difficulties. His family members always remain dissatisfied. They kept on demanding various items, which he could not provide. Due to his sincerity and regular prayers, God decided to help Sakharam. When Sakharam was praying, God appeared in front of him and said, “I have come to help you.” After saying this, he touched a stone which was lying in front of the door. The stone got transformed into gold. “This is for you” God said. However, noticing that Sakharam is not very happy, God touched a huge grinding stone lying at the entrance of the hut. Even that turned into gold. Sakharam did not show much appreciation. He greedily looked at God and said, “Respected God, can’t you give me that finger of yours?”
Are we different from Sakharam? Whether it is a family function, a stay in the hotel, professional job … some of us are rarely satisfied because the reality does not tally with our expectations and demands. Rather than enjoying what is available, we start digging out faults; throw tantrums or “brood”. If a person staying as a paying guest dreams of having a flat, then a larger apartment, then a cottage, bungalow – villa – mansion, it is fine. There is nothing wrong in having ambition or target. However, if the greed continues beyond a limit, it ruins our present, precious moment permanently. Perhaps the best remedy to overcome this greed is to be satisfied with what we have while continuing to make efforts for what we want. Secondly, have heart to go on giving rather than grabbing. What one gets is a multiple of what one gives.
