Copper Output in Japan

Copper output in Japan, the world's No.2 consumer of the metal, will plunge 21 percent in the April-September first-half of this financial year from the same period last year due to damage to plants from the March 11 earthquake.

A three-month suspension of the 300,000 tonnes a year Onahama plant in Fukushima, owned jointly by Mitsubishi Materials , Dowa and Furukawa , dealt the sector a major blow. Although Sumitomo Metal Mining Co was unscathed, regular maintenance work lasting for 60 days at its mainstay plant added to the strain.
