Dollar index is an index to measure movement of USD against a group of 6 currencies.

 6 currencies and their weight-age are as follows:

EUR 57.60%

JPY 13.60%

GBP 11.90%

CAD 9.10%

SEK 4.20%

CHF 3.60%

When USD increases compared to these 6 currencies, USDX goes up or vice-versa. Strong USDX indicates better economy in USA. To understand global strength of USD, one must follow USDX.

Generally commodity prices varies inversely with USD. When USD is strong, prices of commodity falls.

So to trade in commodity one has to closely follow USDX.
