Copper surged to a three-week high, bucking negative demand implications from another batch of weak US data, as prices pushed higher in front of a long holiday weekend with the help of a weaker dollar and steady equities.
London Metal Exchange (LME) three-month copper peaked at $US9,238 per tonne, its highest since May 4, before ending up $US179 at $US9,199.
In New York, the active July COMEX contract shot up 7.50 cents, or 1.8 per cent, to settle at $US4.1860 per lb.
Metals firmed as the euro rose against the dollar, capping off its best week since late April, helped by comments out of Europe suggesting Greece should be able to handle its heavy debt load and possibly underpinning the single currency next week.
