The biggest factor behind the increase in total demand was identifiable investment, which 19% year on year to 281.8 metric tons. The bulk of this came from investors who increased their demand for retail gold products by 25% to 243.1 metric tons.
New investment into exchange-traded funds and similar products was down 7% from a year ago. This amounted to 38.7 metric tons. Some investors exited positions to book profits early in the quarter, before inflows resumed during August and September.
