The increasing labour shortage was turning out to be a major challenge confronting the natural rubber division, Union minister of state for Agriculture on Wednesday said.
Inaugurating the Annual Rubber Conference of the Association of Natural Rubber Producing Countries, said the issue of labour shortage should be addressed by exploring the possibility of developing labour saving culture and harvesting practices and mechanism.
Secretary of General ANRPC said labour shortage was one of the factors which had affected rubber production in member countries.
The overall supply of natural rubber is likely to remain tight for the next couple of years, they said. Annual Rubber Conference of the Association of Natural Rubber Producing Countries is an international organization with 11 rubber producing countries as members.
The fact that expansion of cultivation is happening in many countries in areas which are agro climatically less suited for rubber will also affect supply, according to them.
Global supply of rubber is likely to increase by 6.3 % and touch 9.5 million tones this year. However, in 2011, the supply is likely to remain at he same level they said adding the large proportion of overage trees and the approach to popularize more latex-Timber clones are the other factors which will affect rubber situation
