The European Union Ecolabel Board decided that for the first product group regulated under the new EU Ecolabel Regulation, nickel in stainless steel will not be subject to the hazardous substances requirements of the regulation. The decision was taken on Oct 21, 2010.
The board may apply the same procedure to other product groups.
Nickel is essential for making stainless steel. There is no risk if nickel is used in stainless steel. Nickel is on a list of substances in products to be excluded from ecolabeling in EU. There will be severe consequences for the stainless steel market in Europe. EU intends to align ecolabeling and public procurement. Total public procurement in the EU is about 15% of the EU’s gross domestic product.
