Elevator Mentality

Harry got into an elevator of a tall tower bldg from gr. floor and pressed the button to go to 35- floor. He looked at the huge mirror fixed to the wall, adjusted his hair, made faces and stretched his arms. The elevator stopped on9-fl. And Philip entered. Now both Harry and Philip stood on either side of the elevator and started looking at the changing fl. numbers. On 15-fl. smith entered. He stood in front of the other two forming a triangle. All 3 kept looking at the changing numbers.. on 26-fl. Satish entered. All the 4 guys occupied each angle of the elevator and made a quadrangle while staring at the changing numbers. All of them got off on 35- fl which was their common destination. They had avoided looking at each other and maintained their personal space.

In our day to day life many of us have this elevator mentality of isolating ourselves from others though we have same destination and a common goal. To exist, live and behave like an island is not really wise. This does not mean that we go on intruding in other's affairs. Remaining aloof often indicates an inborn or impulsive tendency to be competitive rather than being cooperative and collaborative within the family or the team. With an obsession for one-upmanship, such persons will awkwardly march faster than the rest of the troop or will play odd tune and music note from the rest of the orchestra. The result? This elusive behaviour results in a stumbling block for the team and leads to self destruction.

If the elevator carrying those 4 guys stopped halfway would these guys have their stiff attitude? Certainly not; there will be instant and spontaneous communication to overcome this common enemy. Then why not establish the bridges of communication and cooperation without offending the privacy in good times also?
