Residents Near Taj Hotel Will Be Screened During WC Matches In Mumbai

Residents of buildings near the Taj Mahal Palace will be under police scrutiny during the cricket World Cup matches in Mumbai as the playing teams will be put up at the hotel.

The security arrangements will be at par with that for US President Barack Obama last year. Mumbai police top brass believes that threat to these teams from terror outfits is same as that to the US president.

Moreover, with a large number of foreign nationals, who have always been easy targets of terror groups, expected to congregate in Mumbai for the three matches, security agencies are not willing to take any chances.

Mumbai police does not want a repeat of the firing at Jama Masjid during the Common-wealth Games.

The firing was widely covered by national and international media, and exposed gaps in New Delhi's security apparatus.

"Terror elements know how to optimise their resources. The firing at Jama Masjid was not a big incident and the place was away from most Commonwealth Games venues. But they timed the incident so well with the games, that it caused the desired effect on the safety environment," a senior Mumbai police officer said.

Security during matches here will be a lot like drills in place during Obama’s visit All the security preparations in Mumbai will thus be aimed to deprive terror elements of any opportunity to cause nuisance.

"Residents of buildings close to Taj Mahal hotel will undergo security scrutiny and will face some movement restrictions when the playing teams are occupying the hotel.

Some restrictions will also be put in the areas adjoining the cricket stadium," sources said.

A few days before the scheduled matches, a heavy deployment of forces is expected in South Mumbai with frequent Naka-Bandis and random searches to be conducted that may cause inconvenience to people.

When contacted, Additional Police Commissioner (south region) Naval Bajaj said several security measures have been taken for the proposed cricket matches. But he refused to comment further.
