Lead The Way In Australian Gold Production

The Goldfields continues to lead the way in Australian gold production, with three of the most productive gold mines in Australia for 2010 located in the region.
The KCGM Super Pit continued its dominant position as Australia’s most productive mine, producing 788,000 ounces of gold last year.

Newmont’s Boddington operation, expected to become Australia’s biggest once it enters full production remained in second place.

St Ives near Kambalda and Sunrise Dam near Laverton came in fourth and fifth respectively. Sandra Close from mining consultants Surbiton Associates said Australia maintained its status as the globe’s second largest gold producer in 2010.

"Gold produced from Australian mines in 2010 was worth some $12 billion at the current spot price, " Dr Close said. "A few operations were affected by rain but some others managed to lift output." However, Surbiton’s latest survey of the gold industry also indicated a decline in funding for exploration within Australia, with most funds flowing overseas.

Australian gold production for 2010 totalled 266 tonnes (8.5m oz), which is a rise of some 17 per cent or 38 tonnes on the 2009 figure and is the highest annual output since 2003.
