Bombay Stock Exchange As A Practical Training Trip

Educational trips to Museums, Zoos and Fire Stations are now passe as schools are taking students to Bombay Stock Exchange for practical training. The BSE Training Institute on Dalal street has initiated a day long programme for school students called "learning outside classroom".

According to the BTI officials, such trips are an attempt to make school children understand the working of Bombay Stock Exchange and to create awareness of stock market, investment, savings, finances etc., among them.

The Head of BTI said, They are creating a pioneering programme to spread awareness to schools kids at an early age. “We believe that today’s child is tomorrow’s investor. The aim is to explain them the concept of savings, investments, stocks, capital markets through activity-based learning. We have created a module where we teach these kids through various quizzes and games so that they enjoy while learning,” said Datta.

BTI is trying to create this programme in a way that it can be replicated across schools all over the country and grow into a major investor education movement. “It is important for the school students to understand these concepts, which cannot happen within the classrooms. At the end of the sessions, we give these kids a piggy bank and a small pass book.

We then ask them to write how much money they have saved, how much they have spent and on what. We have got a very good response so far and we are planning to continue this programme. So far, we have allowed kids in the age group of 9-13 to participate in the programme,” Datta said.

A supervisor of Secondary Section of St. Mary’s ICSE school at Mazgaon, said, “We took a batch of 35 students at BSE. We have a subject called commercial applications for class IX so we wanted to give the students a practical knowledge of how stock exchange works. Had I taught it in the class, half of them would not have understood it. The visit proved to be very helpful for our students.”

A Teacher From J B Petit School - Fort Said, "We had taken 80 students from standard VI to BSE. At our school, we are already trying to make learning relevant through activity based teaching methods. Such educational field trips provide valuable and interactive lessons for all ages. We are planning to take another batch of students to BSE very soon.”
