Karan Johar’s WE ARE FAMILY is an official remake of Hollywood stepmom released in 1999 which itself was derived from NO SAD SONG FOR ME or TV series THE OTHER WOMAN.
Aman (Arjun Rampal) and Maya (Kajol) who are divorced but stays together for the sake of their 3 kids (in original story there are only 2 kids). Aman is now in love with Shreya (Kareena Kapoor). Maya doesn’t want Shreya to be close to kids. Then she is diagnosed of cervical cancer. For better future of her kids, she sees Shreya the best substitute for her.

The eldest daughter, more mature among the 3 kids shows prominently her dislike towards Shreya.
Both Kajol and Kareena as usual done their jobs best. Kajol’s acting is marvelous in the scenes – when she reveals her approaching death to her kids. Kareena gives a mature performance as the career-woman and to be a good mother. Arjun Rampal once again showed that he is a good artist. He never got lost in a female-dominant film. Anchal Munjal as the elder daughter is also remarkable.
Editor Deepa Bhatia keeps the narrative tight. Ehssan-Loy’s music is okay. Niranjan Lyengar’s dialogues are good but can’t create the effects one wants. In an almost “in-house drama”, Mohanan’s cinematography is limited.
If you don’t see the movie, you will lose nothing. But for a change, as a family entertainment, you can watch the movie.
